3D XPoint: Intel's stack memory in hardware focus

3D XPoint: Intel's stack memory in hardware focus

Super fast speed and long life. What sounds like the legend eggs wool milk sow in the storage area, is not a fantasy, but a new marketable technology.

Intel and Micron Technology announced a new storage technology with 3D XPoint, replacing labour as well as mass storage. In 3D XPoint, the memory cells are arranged not only flat, but also in the amount. This allows an extremely high data density in confined spaces. At the same time, 3D XPoint combines the positive properties of NAND (is installed for example in SSDs) and DRAM: 3D XPoint is fast like DRAM and it so cheap and durable, such as NAND.

Some amazing numbers
3D XPoint eight has one to ten times higher storage density as DRAM.
3D XPoint is a thousand times faster than NAND (in theory).
Using the PCI-Express interface 3D XPoint delivers approximately ten times higher performance than NAND.
Storage technologies were runners, a hard disk could cross only a basketball court at the same time, in a NAND memory running a marathon and 3D XPoint circumnavigates the world.

Cross tree

Crossed, arranged head connect submicroscopic memory cells.
Nonvolatile
3D XPoint is non-volatile. The information is maintained without active power - such as NAND memory.
Stackable
3D-XPoint-Speicher is a layered stack. Each additional layer increases the amount of memory.
Selector
DRAM requires a transistor memory cell. This increases the cost. 3D XPoint, write and read operations are governed, however, by the voltage level.
Memory cell
Each memory cell can store only a single bit. NAND memory are partly multiple bits.
Long service life
According to the developers write operations do not significantly affect the 3D-XPoint-Speicher.
