Free update to Windows 10 after July 29?
Is it possible to upgrade, unless you simply pull the installation media after July 29 still free on Windows 10?Many are likely to ask themselves this question, the love to the "Five and the Weggli" would have. The idea is tempting: it has have to enter finally have been a Windows license key on any PC. And on the official Microsoft website you can but before July 29 (and determined even after) easily pull the ISO image to burn an installation DVD or create an appropriate USB-stick. So sounds like thus also later, it could make the actual upgrade on your own PC. Not?
Nice idea, but: Unfortunately, no!
The reason is this: it involves the conversion of the existing license key of Windows 7 or Windows 8 or 8.1. This transformation takes place during the upgrade process, so while the installation of the upgrade runs on the PC. And this conversion is foreseen only until July 29.
On newer PCs, the keys in the BIOS are stored and are therefore required for new installations of its Windows version by the user. Hardware IDs, some of the motherboard are associated with the key. During the upgrade process E.g. the Windows 7 key is in a Windows-10-key cast and (associated with the hardware ID) in the background via the Internet to Microsoft delivered and stored on the local servers. It is this process that Microsoft probably will be from July 29.
If you install Windows 10 but on a win-7 / win-8-PC at a later time, a Microsoft server is queried as usual in the background via the Internet if the existing key for Windows 10 is valid. Should you have missed the deadline, Microsoft's license-key service will spit out a «no» and deny activation. Then, you would have to purchase a new license for Windows-10-upgrade.
