Many large E-Mail providers like Deutsche Telekom also now automatically encrypt the emails of its customers. Thus although a mail is backed up to a large extent, the message moves on their way to the recipient but on many Internet servers. Not all pass it through encrypted channels. The communication takes a detour through other countries, increases the probability that it lands unencrypted storage data stores of different types.
Who wanted to make sure that only the registered recipients read the sent messages, had long a tedious procedure access: "Pretty Good Privacy" (PGP) is the standard for the encryption of emails for years. For normal users, was dealing with two digital keys but quite impractical and required additional software. The browser plug-in "Mailvelope" based on the popular development of OpenPGP and encrypting is much easier.

Encrypt email with Mailvelope
Mailvelope has the great advantage that users can encrypt their messages directly in the browser. Email programs like Outlook or Thunderbird are not necessary. Also create the security key is very simple. However the manufacturers of only plugins for Firefox, offer the Telekom browser 7.0 and chrome. We explain how they install Mailvelope and ready, in our photo slideshow. You will learn how to apply the program with your t-online.de address, in our short workshop.
How OpenPGP
Because the encryption program based on OpenPGP, a key pair to use, which consists of a public and a private section is also used for Mailvelope. The public key can and should be made accessible as possible for everyone.
This is no danger for the security of your messages because only messages are encoded with the public portion, which will be sent to you. Only with the private portion of the key pair, the Mailvelope messages are readable. This part should be so secret kept.
Mailvelope stores the private key in encrypted form. Also, its owner must create a password that is queried when receiving any Mailvelope communication. A strong, you should choose at least eight characters long password of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and special characters. With a weaker password, the risk grows that hackers can steal the private keys.
